So how much Melatonin should you take?
Most people make the common mistake of assuming that higher doses of melatonin will result in better sleep. But incredibly enough, this is opposite from the truth.
For Occasional Sleeplessness or Insomnia
The National Sleep Foundation (NSP) suggests adults consume between 2/10ths of a milligram to 5 milligrams 60 minutes before bedtime.
Too much melatonin disrupts the sleep cycle (often resulting in headaches, nausea, dizziness, or irritability), so the NSP recommends starting with only 2/10ths of a milligram and increasing it as needed.
Melatonin Dosage for Children
Children generally need less melatonin than adults. Recommended dosage information is usually based on a 120-150 pound adult.
The research on melatonin for children is inconclusive. Before giving melatonin to a child, first talk to the child’s pediatrician.
To adjust the dosage according to the child's weight: divide the child's weight by 120-150 to get the percentage of the adult dose that should be administered to the child.
